Frequently Asked Questions

Just what is Chinese Drywall?
"Chinese Drywall" is sheetrock produced in China, some of which is alleged to contain soda ash and sulfur.

Why should I be concerned about it?
People have reported gases leeching out of homes and buildings built with this material under humid conditions.

What do these gases do?
It is unknown at this time if these are any health hazards involved. Some occupants of buildings with Chinese Drywall report foul odors and corrosion of metal surfaces.

What type of corrosion?
Damage to air conditioning systems, plumbing, appliances, televisions have all been reported.

Is it in my home?
Highly unlikely. Reports indicate that only some homes built or remodeled since 2005 are affected. If your home or office was constructed before 2005 you should be ok.

If my home or office was built after 2005 do I need testing?
Probably not. Try talking to your builder first to confirm that this product was not used in the construction of your home or office.

What should I look for? What indicates a need for testing?
Look out for abnormal (fast) corrosion of metals in the home. A rotten egg or ammonia smell is another indicator. Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co. (KPT) is the target of a number of state and private investigations and a defendant in a recent class-action lawsuit - drywall marked with the label "Knauf" or "Made in China" could be suspect (easiest to see in the attic).

Does a rotten egg smell always indicate a need for testing?
No. Sometimes that odor can be caused by contaminants in your well water or your hot water heater.
